Headset Schmedset

February 8, 2007

Since I work in a cubicle environment with plenty of conversation going on around me most of the time (my favorite: those who holler at each other over the cube walls instead of picking up a phone!), I rely on music played through headsets to keep my sanity. It is the only way I can manage to get through the day doing my job as a technical writer. Anywho, my crappy Radio Shack specials have disintegrated over the years, so I figured I’d get a new, high-end unit for Christmas 2006. My wife got me some Solitude noise-cancelling headsets, which I proceeded to use every day. Also, it should be noted that I babied these headsets; I handled them gingerly and locked them up every time I walked out of the office. So what happened today? THEY BROKE! One of the ear cups simply broke off in my hand when I applied slight downward pressure to adjust the adjustable headband. Luckily, the vendor who sold them to us is awesome and will take them back and refund my wife’s credit card with no worries at all…but still, THEY BROKE! These things were just over a month old…and they were EXPENSIVE…not as much as a set of Bose specials, but just under two hundred buckaroonies. What the heck kind of quality control leads to that kind of disintegration? I…am…flabbergasted!! Good news is, at least I didn’t throw out my Radio Shack junkers; if not for them, there’s no way I could get through work until I find a new set.
