The Fictioneer

A blog about a writer’s fiction and truth, which are equally strange

Workshop Bound

admin | April 29, 2009

Well, I’m heading for the marketing workshop in Oregon soon, so I won’t be posting to this blog for a while.  In fact, you might not see new content here for at least a few days, till I get to the West Coast.  But hang in there!  If you’d like to read something, I’ve posted [...]

Workshop Soon

admin | April 28, 2009

Well, the big fiction marketing workshop is just days away!  I can’t wait to get together with my mentors and fellow writers in Oregon and put my nose to the grindstone.  Who would’ve thought I’d be so glad to take a trip where all I’m going to do is work hard for a solid week?  [...]

Yard Work Weekend

admin | April 26, 2009

With sunny weather in the mid-to-upper 80s, I had to get out and hit the yard work this weekend.  I got a lot done, too.  Mowed, trimmed, swept, set up patio furniture, put up lawn ornaments, etc.  It really felt good getting some sunshine and a sweet summer preview.  It was also great seeing my [...]

First Draft Done!

admin | April 23, 2009

The bouncing baby first draft of my latest novel was born today!  It weighed in at just over 102,000 words.  Please join me in welcoming World of Trouble into the world!  (Applaud here, please.)  Now, I need to get rolling on preparations for the marketing workshop, which starts next Friday!  Hoo boy!
Now for today’s photo.  [...]

One Chapter To Go

admin | April 22, 2009

As I close in on the last pages of my current novel, it occurs to me that this is the first time I’ve documented my writing process for a project so thoroughly.  Never before have I blogged on a daily basis about the development of a novel, basically tracking it from start to finish.  When [...]

Racing Toward The Finish

admin | April 21, 2009

One of the things I tend to do when working on a novel is this:  as I hit the true home stretch, within a few thousand words of the finish, I write twice as much as usual.  I try like crazy to get to that finish line as quickly as possible.  That’s exactly what happened [...]

Chugging Along

admin | April 20, 2009

I’m still chugging along on the current novel…now within three thousand words of the finish line.  If I keep up my daily rate of a thousand words, that means I ought to wrap it up in three days.  It’s hard to believe that I’m almost there.  I’ve been working so hard for so long on [...]

Brainstorming Breakthrough

admin | April 19, 2009

Remember when I was singing my wife’s praises the other day?  When I wrote about how supportive she is of my writing and how she helps in myriad little ways to clear my schedule for composition?  Well, she’s proving to be even more helpful than I ever imagined.  Today, I was struggling with a plot [...]

Sunny Day

admin | April 18, 2009

Today was sunny and warm, a rare perfect Spring day in my hometown.  I couldn’t bear to waste it, what with all the outdoor work on my to-do list, so I got out there and did what I could.  Washed both cars (they really needed it!), dug out and cleaned up the patio furniture, put [...]

Understanding Partner

admin | April 17, 2009

When you’re a fiction writer, one of the most important things you can have is an understanding partner.  Someone who “gets it” and does what it takes to help you do the work and break through.  With such a person on your side, you can make it as a writer for the long haul.  With [...]
